Pāṇini’s fourteen Māheśvara Sūtras organize Sanskrit sounds so efficiently that short combinations called pratyāhāras can represent entire classes of sounds within his grammatical system. पञ्चदशे दिने अन्तिमं कौतुकम्। सर्वेभ्यः महत्तमम्। 🙏 pañcadaśe dine antimaṃ kautukam. sarvebhyaḥ mahattamam. (On the fifteenth day, the last wonder. The greatest of all.)
पाणिनिः सम्पूर्णं संस्कृतव्याकरणं चतुःसहस्रसूत्रेषु अलिखत्। pāṇiniḥ sampūrṇaṃ saṃskṛtavyākaraṇaṃ catuḥsahasrasūtreṣu alikhat. (Pāṇini wrote all of Sanskrit grammar in about four thousand rules.)
किन्तु तस्य पूर्वं सः एकं समस्यां दृष्टवान् — 🤔 kintu tasya pūrvaṃ saḥ ekaṃ samasyāṃ dṛṣṭavān — (But before that, he saw one problem:)
"स्वराः" इति कथं वदामि? "स्पर्शाः" इति कथं वदामि? प्रतिवारं सर्वाणि अक्षराणि किम् उच्चारयामि? 😩 prativāraṃ sarvāṇi akṣarāṇi kim uccārayāmi? (How do I say "all the vowels"? Must I list every letter, every time?)
अतः सः एकम् उपायम् अकल्पयत् — चतुर्दश सूत्राणि। ataḥ saḥ ekam upāyam akalpayat — caturdaśa sūtrāṇi. (So he devised a method — fourteen aphorisms.)
तेभ्यः त्रिशतं प्रत्याहाराः उत्पद्यन्ते। 🤯 tebhyaḥ triśataṃ pratyāhārāḥ utpadyante. (From them, three hundred shorthand labels arise.)

Before Pāṇini could write a single grammatical rule, he had a compression problem.
He needed to say things like "all the vowels", "all the stops", "all the semivowels" — constantly, across thousands of rules. Writing out the list every time would have made the book enormous.
His solution is, to my mind, the single most elegant thing in the history of language.
माहेश्वरसूत्राणि — The fourteen 📜

Every sound in Sanskrit, listed once. Nothing repeated except one ह.
The final letter of each line — ण्, क्, ङ्, च्, ट्, ण्, म्… — is not a sound. It is a marker (अनुबन्ध). A bracket. A tag.
Now watch the trick ✨
Take any letter, and any later marker. Say them together as one syllable.
That syllable now means "everything from here to there."
🔹 अ (first letter of line 1) + ल् (last marker, line 14) → अल् = every sound in the language
🔹 अ + च् (marker of line 4) → अच् = अ इ उ ऋ ऌ ए ओ ऐ औ = all the vowels
🔹 ह (line 5) + ल् (line 14) → हल् = all the consonants
🔹 य + ण् (line 6) → यण् = य व र ल = the four semivowels
🔹 झ + ष् (line 9) → झष् = झ भ घ ढ ध = the voiced aspirates
Two letters. Any group you like. 🤯
There are about three hundred such labels — प्रत्याहार (pratyāhāra) — available from those fourteen lines.
And here is the real genius 🧠
The order is not the natural alphabet order.
If Pāṇini had simply listed क ख ग घ ङ, च छ ज झ ञ… the grammatically useful groups would have been scattered all over the list, and no continuous slice would capture them.
So he re-sorted every sound in the language so that every group his grammar needed would fall into one unbroken run.
He did not write down a list. He solved an optimisation problem — arrange 40+ items such that ~300 specific subsets are each contiguous.
And then he made the solution fourteen lines long, so a student could memorise it in an afternoon. 😲
(Kātyāyana, centuries later, debated whether the order could be improved. Alternative arrangements were attempted in other grammars. Pāṇini's is the one that survived.)
Why it's called "Śiva's aphorisms" 🪘
Tradition says these sounds emerged from the डमरु (ḍamaru) — the hourglass drum in Śiva's hand — as he danced, and Pāṇini simply heard them.
Take that story however you like. But there is something right in it: the tradition felt that this arrangement was too perfect to be merely invented. 🙏
A 2,500-year-old system, still working 💻
Pāṇini's अष्टाध्यायी has roughly 4,000 rules, with metarules, recursion, and ordered rule-application.
In 1967, Peter Ingerman proposed that Backus Normal Form — the notation used to define programming languages — be renamed Panini–Backus Form, in his honour.
And the Aṣṭādhyāyī itself was, for centuries, not written down. It was memorised — using exactly the redundant recitation techniques we saw on Day 7.
A formal grammar, held in human memory, error-checked by voice, for two and a half thousand years. 🌸
